A quality mattress is an investment in your sleep and wellbeing. With proper care and maintenance, you can help preserve its comfort, support, and hygiene for years to come.

This guide outlines simple steps to keep your mattress in excellent condition and maximise its lifespan.

Use a Mattress Protector

One of the easiest ways to protect your mattress is by using a high-quality mattress protector.

A mattress protector helps shield against:

– Spills and stains

– Dust and debris

– Sweat and moisture

– Everyday wear and tear

Regularly washing your mattress protector according to the manufacturer’s instructions can help maintain a cleaner sleeping environment.

Rotate Your Mattress Regularly

To promote even wear, rotate your mattress 180 degrees every three to six months.

Regular rotation can help:

– Dust and debris

– Spills and stains

– Sweat and moisture

– Everyday wear and tear

– Reduce body impressions

– Encourage more even support

– Extend the lifespan of the mattress

Unless specifically designed to be flipped, most modern mattresses should only be rotated rather than turned over.

Keep Your Mattress Clean

Vacuum Regularly

Use a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment to remove dust, dirt, and allergens from the mattress surface.

Vacuuming every few months can help maintain a fresher sleeping environment.

Address Spills Promptly

If a spill occurs:

1. Blot the affected area immediately using a clean, dry cloth.

2. Avoid rubbing, as this may spread moisture further into the mattress.

3. Use a mild cleaning solution if necessary.

4. Allow the mattress to air dry completely before replacing bedding.

Excessive moisture should always be avoided, as it may damage mattress materials.

Freshen Naturally

Allowing your mattress to breathe occasionally by removing bedding for a few hours can help reduce moisture build-up and maintain freshness.

Ensure Proper Support

Using the correct bed base is essential for maintaining mattress performance.

A suitable foundation helps:

– Support the mattress evenly

– Prevent premature wear

– Maintain comfort and structural integrity

– Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations regarding compatible bed frames and support systems.

Avoid Jumping or Standing on the Mattress

While mattresses are designed to support sleeping bodies, concentrated pressure from jumping or standing can damage internal components and reduce the lifespan of the mattress.

Maintain a Healthy Sleep Environment

A clean bedroom contributes to a cleaner mattress.

To support mattress hygiene:

– Wash bed linen regularly

– Keep pets off the bed where possible

– Ensure adequate bedroom ventilation

– Manage humidity levels within the room

These simple habits can help reduce the build-up of dust, allergens, and moisture.

Even with excellent care, mattresses do not last forever.

Signs that a mattress may be reaching the end of its useful life include:

– Visible sagging or indentations

– Reduced comfort or support

– Increased aches or stiffness upon waking

– Noticeable deterioration in sleep quality

Replacing an ageing mattress can help restore comfort and support, contributing to better overall sleep.

A Little Care Goes a Long Way
Regular cleaning and simple maintenance can help protect your mattress and preserve its performance for years to come. By keeping your mattress clean, supported, and well cared for, you can continue enjoying a comfortable and restorative sleep environment night after night.
